Facts

Benriach is a Speyside distillery, yet it has long broken the region's gentle reputation by making peated spirit too. This bottling takes that smoky malt and matures it in quarter casks. These are small barrels, roughly a quarter of the usual size. Less liquid touches far more wood, so the whisky pulls flavour from the oak quickly. You get wood smoke and burning heather, then orchard fruit and a sweet hit of marzipan. White pepper and warm spice trail through the finish. Pour it neat and let the smoke settle around the fruit.

Benriach

The Benriach distillery is located in the Speyside region of Scotland and was established in 1898. It is known for producing single malt whiskies that are characterized by their fruity and floral notes, often with a hint of peat smoke. The distillery sources its water from the Burnside Springs and uses traditional methods of production, including floor malting. In 2004, the distillery was closed but was reopened in 2008 after being purchased by a consortium led by Billy Walker. Today, Benriach produces a range of whiskies, including aged expressions and limited edition bottlings. The distillery is also known for experimenting with different cask finishes and maturation techniques, resulting in unique and interesting flavour profiles.

About the Benriach Peated Quarter Casks

Benriach Peated Quarter Casks is a peated single malt Scotch whisky from Benriach. A distillery in the Speyside region of Scotland. The name comes from the small barrels used to mature it. A quarter cask holds about a quarter of a standard barrel. So the spirit meets far more wood for its size. That extra contact is the whole idea behind Benriach Peated Quarter Casks. The distillery explains that smaller casks let wood and spirit interact more. Building depth of flavour and aroma in a shorter time. The result is a full, layered dram drawn from active oak rather than long years of quiet ageing. Speyside is famous for soft, fruity malts, but Benriach has always done things its own way. The distillery runs peated and unpeated spirit through the year. Here the peated style leads. Wood smoke and burning heather open the nose, with orchard fruit and cinnamon sugar close behind for balance. On the palate the smoke mellows into smouldering embers. Underneath sit fresh fruit, a malty backbone and a nutty edge from the oak. Sweet marzipan and bright orange lift the middle, while vanilla rounds everything off. White pepper and gentle spice carry the warmth into a long, smoky finish. Bottled at 46% ABV, this whisky is non-chill filtered with no added colouring. So the texture stays rich and the gold colour comes from the cask alone. Drink it neat in a clean glass. Give the smoke a moment to settle and the fruit and spice will rise to meet it.
