Bourbon barrels did the long work here, holding the spirit for two decades and one more year. The finish came later, in Tawny Port hogsheads from the Douro region of northern Portugal. Those casks had already spent years holding fortified wine, and it shows. Pineapple and orange lift the nose, with honey and vanilla behind them. The palate turns fuller: coconut, salted caramel, toffee and ripe strawberry. Plums and dark dried fruit stretch the finish out. Twenty one year old malt is calm enough to take port without losing itself.

The Benriach distillery is located in the Speyside region of Scotland and was established in 1898. Benriach 21 years Tawny Port Finish is a single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside. The spirit matured in American bourbon barrels for 21 years. Tawny Port hogsheads from the Douro region of Portugal then finished it. The bottling sits at 46%, non chill filtered and naturally coloured. Nothing is stripped out and nothing is added back. The colour in the glass comes from the wood alone. Tawny port matures in wood for years before it is bottled. The casks that come out are soft and deeply oxidised. Benriach took its hogsheads from the Douro region in northern Portugal. Only a small batch was used. Twenty one years in bourbon wood leaves the spirit calm and open. A short spell in port then reshapes it without burying the malt underneath. The nose opens bright, with pineapple and orange leading. Honey and vanilla sit underneath, and a faint earthy note trails behind. The palate is where the port lands. Coconut and vanilla meet salted caramel and toffee. Strawberry and sour cherry follow, sweet and ripe. Toasted oak arrives late and holds the line. Plum, dried fruit and raisins stretch the finish out for a long time. Benriach 21 years Tawny Port Finish replaced a 15 year old port finish in 2016. Six extra years in bourbon wood change the balance completely. The older malt carries more weight, so the wine sits alongside it rather than on top. Other bottlings in the range lean on sherry, virgin oak or peat. This one stays fruity and rounded, and it is best neat.
