Facts

Back in the early 1970s, Benriach did something odd for Speyside. The team revived a 19th-century habit of smoking their malted barley over Highland peat. That choice still shapes this whisky today. The spirit rests at least ten years in three different casks: bourbon barrels, Jamaican rum casks and toasted virgin oak. Each adds its own layer. You get peat smoke wrapped in honey, vanilla and sweet strawberry. There is coconut, cream and a flicker of grapefruit too. It drinks soft and warm, more campfire than bonfire. Pour it neat and let the smoke and fruit unfold slowly.

About the Benriach 10 years The Smoky Ten

Benriach 10 years The Smoky Ten is a peated single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, Scotland. The Benriach distillery built this expression around an old idea. In the early 1970s, Benriach broke from its Speyside neighbours and started smoking malted barley over wood-rich Highland peat. That nod to the 19th century gives the whisky its sweet, smoky heart. What makes Benriach 10 years The Smoky Ten distinctive is the cask work. The spirit matures for at least ten years across three cask types. Bourbon barrels bring vanilla and honey. Jamaican rum casks add fruity, tropical depth. Toasted virgin oak layers in woody spice and warmth. The result balances peat smoke against soft sweetness. Expect honey, vanilla and ripe strawberry up front. Coconut and cream sit alongside fresh fruit and a bright grapefruit lift. Pine and woody oak frame the smoky finish. The rum-cask fruit keeps the smoke playful. At 46% ABV, it carries real weight without turning harsh. This is a smoky whisky for people who like fruit with their fire. The peat never dominates. It drifts through the glass like distant campfire smoke, sweet rather than ashy. Curious newcomers and seasoned peat fans both find something here. Enjoy it neat in a tulip glass. Give it a few minutes to open and the layers reveal themselves. The Smoky Ten shows why this Speyside single malt earned its reputation for balance. Newcomers find it welcoming, and seasoned drinkers find it moreish. It is honest, generous whisky that rewards a slow evening and an unhurried pour.
