Distillery
The Aberlour distillery is located in the Speyside region of Scotland and was founded in 1879 by James Fleming. The distillery draws its water from the nearby mountain, Ben Rinnes, which is known for its pure and soft water. Aberlour produces a range of single malt whiskies, including the 12-year-old, 16-year-old, and A'Bunadh, which is a cask-strength expression. The distillery uses traditional copper pot stills and maturation takes place in oak casks, resulting in whiskies that are rich and complex with a fruity character. The Aberlour distillery has a long-standing relationship with the famous French cognac house, Martell, and have collaborated on a number of limited edition whiskies.

Aberlour A’Bunadh is a single malt whisky made in Speyside, Scotland, by Aberlour Distillery. It has no stated age. Instead, it is offered in batch releases. Each batch number appears on the label to show its vintage. The whisky aims to recreate the original whisky made at the distillery over a century ago. It is matured only in first-fill Spanish Oloroso sherry butts. This gives it a rich, dried-fruit flavour and deep colour. A’Bunadh is bottled at cask strength. It is never chill filtered and no caramel colouring is added. The colour is deep amber or copper. On the nose you’ll find cooked fruits like apricot and golden raisins, plus candied orange zest. Spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla are present too. The palate is bold and warming. It shows dried fruit, caramel, dark chocolate and baking spices. You may taste ginger, black pepper, and hints of espresso or dark chocolate. The finish is long, spicy, and warming. A’Bunadh is known as a classic “sherry bomb”. This term describes whiskies with intense sherry influence and rich spicy character. Aberlour helped make that style popular among whisky fans. It has earned awards and praise. In 2022, batch #70 won Whisky of the Year at the International Whisky Competition with 95.8 points. It also won Best Speyside Single Malt at the same event. Earlier batches have been recognised at the World Whiskies Awards, including Best Speyside Single Malt in 2021 and 2022. It suits drinkers who want a full strength whisky with bold fruit and spice. It is not light or easy going. A few drops of water can help open its flavour. A’Bunadh may be too intense for beginners, but it is rewarding for those who enjoy rich, sherried single malts.
