Glendronach Peated Port Wood is a peated single malt Scotch whisky from the Highlands. The distillery has been working in Scotland since 1826, and this release carries no age statement. Peat smoke sits at the core of the spirit. A final maturation in port pipes from Portugal's Douro Valley finishes the job. Bottled at 46%, it is non chill filtered with no added colouring. The colour runs dark amber with a ruby heart. The port angle here is not marketing decoration. Casked port sailed into Scotland through the nineteenth century, and this bottling nods to that trade. Portugal's Douro Valley has been port country for centuries, and its pipes carry deep colour. Glendronach's whisky maker hand picked those pipes and combined them for the final maturation. Peated Highland spirit and old fortified wine share one cask, which is not a common pairing. The nose opens on fresh fruit: wild strawberry, raspberry, a little heather and something earthy underneath. Sweet wood smoke drifts across it, dusted with cinnamon sugar. The palate turns tart and red, with cherry, black pepper and a smear of dark chocolate. Stewed barley sits behind the fruit. Smoke arrives in waves and dries out towards ash. The finish is long, with leather, oak and warm spice, and caramel sweetness holding on underneath. Most of the Glendronach range carries an age statement. Glendronach Peated Port Wood does not, and it leans on peat instead of years. The contrast is the whole point: red wine sweetness pushing against Highland smoke. Whisky Advocate scored it 89 points in 2018, at around 70 pounds a bottle. Numbers aside, this is the bottling to reach for when you want smoke over sweetness. Neat is enough.
