Facts

GlenDronach was founded in 1826 near Forgue, by Huntly, in the northeast of Scotland. It became one of the first distilleries to legally produce whisky under licence. That long history shows in the glass. The distillery is known above all for maturing its spirit in ex-sherry casks. This eight year old carries the name The Hielan, a nod to the Scots word for Highland. You taste warm honey and orchard apple first. Then dried fruit, a little cinnamon, and a soft marzipan sweetness roll through. It is generous and rounded whisky, best enjoyed neat so its sherry character can open slowly.

About the Glendronach 8 years The Hielan

Glendronach 8 years The Hielan is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Glendronach distillery. The distillery sits near Forgue, by Huntly, in the Highland region of Scotland. It was founded in 1826, making it one of the oldest licensed distilleries in the country. The name The Hielan nods to the old Scots word for Highland. This is an approachable, everyday introduction to a house with real depth. It rewards a slow, unhurried pour. The hallmark of Glendronach has always been sherry-cask maturation. The distillery leans on ex-sherry casks, in particular oloroso and Pedro Ximenez wood. That tradition gives this single malt its rich, fruit-forward core. Expect warm honey and soft caramel on the nose. Ripe apple and dried fruit follow, wrapped in gentle cinnamon spice. There is a marzipan note too, a hint of almond sweetness that runs underneath the fruit. At eight years old, this whisky is young but far from thin. The sherry influence fills it out and adds real body. A thread of citrus keeps everything bright and fresh. You get lemon zest and a clean fruity lift against the darker sherry tones. Bottled at 46 percent, it holds its shape well. The texture is smooth and generous without ever feeling heavy on the palate. Glendronach 8 years The Hielan is best enjoyed neat, in a simple glass. Give it a few minutes to breathe and the flavours settle and deepen. This is honest, characterful Highland whisky at a fair price. It suits both newcomers curious about sherried single malts and seasoned drinkers. Few Scotch whiskies offer this much sherry character so early in their maturation. That is what makes it worth seeking out.
