Glendronach 8 years is a Highland single malt from Aberdeenshire in the north east of Scotland. The Glendronach distillery sits near Forgue, a few miles from the town of Huntly. Its 8 year old release carries the name The Hielan, a nod to the Highlands themselves. Youth is the point here. Eight years in wood gives a bright, lively malt that still shows the house style. James Allardes founded the distillery in 1826, in a quiet glen in Aberdeenshire. The name comes from Gaelic and means valley of the brambles. Brambles are blackberries, and the glen is named for them. Owners have come and gone since, from Teacher's to Chivas to Brown-Forman. What has stayed constant is the sherry cask. Most of the core range matures in oloroso and Pedro Ximenez wood. Orange and lemon lead the aroma, bright and fruity rather than heavy. Cinnamon and nutmeg follow, with a light floral lift behind them. The palate turns sweeter and rounder. Butterscotch and toffee arrive first, then dried fruit and a touch of dried apricot. Sherry and vanilla hold the middle together. Black pepper and warm spice close things out, with milk chocolate and oak trailing after. Most of the range wears its sherry heavily, starting with the 12 year old. Glendronach 8 years takes a different route, marrying bourbon casks with sherry casks. That mix keeps the fruit forward and holds the oak in check. Eight years is young for this distillery, so the spirit does more of the talking.
