Facts

Glenmorangie spent eight years filling this spirit into ex-bourbon barrels before moving it on. The whisky then rested another four years in old Cognac casks. Those casks had been used several times already. That gentle handling lets the fruit lead instead of the wood. You get dried apricot, orange and a soft thread of honey. Almond and a little spice sit underneath. It is a small batch bottling, first released back in 2021. Pour it neat and it opens slowly. The malt stays clear and bright the whole way through, with vanilla rounding off the finish.

Glenmorangie's signature style is characterized by its light and delicate flavours. The distillery produces a variety of single malt whiskies, including the Glenmorangie Original, which is aged for ten years in ex-bourbon casks, and the Glenmorangie Signet, which is a unique blend of whiskies aged up to 40 years in a combination of different casks. In addition to its traditional single malt whiskies, Glenmorangie has also released several experimental and limited edition expressions, including the Private Edition range, which showcases innovative maturation techniques and unique cask finishes.

About the Glenmorangie 13 years Barrel Select Release

Glenmorangie 13 years Barrel Select Release is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Highland region of Scotland. It comes from Glenmorangie, one of the most respected names in Highland whisky. The spirit first matured for eight years in ex-bourbon barrels. After that it moved into Cognac casks for a final four-year finish. This long, two-stage journey gives the whisky real depth and a soft, fruity character. What makes this release stand out is the choice of cask. The Cognac barrels had already been filled several times before use. That means the wood speaks quietly here. Instead of heavy oak, you taste bright fruit and gentle sweetness. Glenmorangie released this small batch expression in 2021. It quickly became a favourite among fans of the distillery's fruit-forward house style. On the nose and palate the whisky leans into orchard and stone fruit. Expect dried apricot, fresh fruit and a lift of pineapple. There is honey and vanilla for sweetness. Orange and lemon peel add a citrus edge. Toasted almond, raisins & sultanas and a touch of spice fill out the middle. A clean malty note runs underneath it all. The oak from the Cognac casks frames everything without taking over. This balance is a signature of the Glenmorangie 13 years Barrel Select Release. The 46% strength keeps the flavours focused and bright. The texture stays smooth but never heavy. Each sip feels rounded and easy to follow. Best enjoyed neat, this Highland single malt rewards a little patience. Let it sit in the glass for a moment. The fruit and honey grow as it opens. It suits both newcomers and seasoned drinkers who love a fruit-led dram. A fine example of what Glenmorangie does so well.
