Facts

The name says it all. "Bacalta" is Scots Gaelic for "baked," and that single word holds the whole story. Master distiller Dr Bill Lumsden had bespoke American oak casks heavily toasted. Seasoned with sweet Malmsey Madeira wine, then left to bake under the Madeira sun. Spirit aged first in bourbon barrels finished its life inside that warm, sticky wood. The result tastes like a sunny afternoon. Think dried apricot and date, caramel and maple syrup, a little orange and a whisper of mint. It is rich without being heavy, and best enjoyed neat.

Glenmorangie

Glenmorangie is a Scottish whisky distillery located in Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland. Founded in 1843, it is one of the older distilleries in Scotland. The distillery is known for producing single malt whisky using barley and pure spring water from the Tarlogie Springs, located on the distillery grounds. Glenmorangie's signature style is characterized by its light and delicate flavours. The distillery produces a variety of single malt whiskies, including the Glenmorangie Original, which is aged for ten years in ex-bourbon casks, and the Glenmorangie Signet, which is a unique blend of whiskies aged up to 40 years in a combination of different casks. In addition to its traditional single malt whiskies, Glenmorangie has also released several experimental and limited edition expressions, including the Private Edition range, which showcases innovative maturation techniques and unique cask finishes.

About the Glenmorangie Bacalta

Glenmorangie Bacalta is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky and the eighth release in the celebrated Private Edition range. It comes from the Glenmorangie distillery in Scotland, long famous for its tall stills and inventive cask finishes. This is a whisky built around one bold idea. The word "bacalta" is Scots Gaelic for "baked," and that name is no accident. Dr Bill Lumsden, the distillery's director of whisky creation, wanted to capture sunshine in a cask. He had bespoke American oak barrels heavily toasted. They were then seasoned with sweet Malmsey Madeira wine and left to bake in the island's heat. Once emptied, the casks travelled to Scotland to finish spirit already matured in ex-bourbon barrels. The flavour follows that journey closely. Expect ripe dried apricot, plump date and a swirl of dried fruit. There is caramel and maple syrup, a touch of chocolate, and warm oak underneath. Bright notes of orange and lemon zest lift it. While gentle spice and a cool hint of mint keep things lively. Glenmorangie Bacalta is bottled at 46% ABV and is not chill filtered. That helps it hold a full, slightly oily texture on the tongue. The finish turns rich and syrupy, with nutty, malty depth that lingers. This single malt rewards slow sipping. Pour it neat and let the baked-cask sweetness unfold in the glass. It suits anyone curious about how wood and weather shape a whisky. As a limited Private Edition bottling, it also makes a fine choice for collectors who love a clever story.
