Aberlour 15 years Select Cask Reserve is a single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, in the north of Scotland. The distillery stands on the northern edge of Ben Rinnes. Spirit for this release rests fifteen years in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. It is bottled at 43% ABV. Neither wood is allowed to take over the other. The name points to that careful selection of casks. Aberlour has been distilling on this site since 1826. Rain and snowmelt gather across the peaty moors above the distillery. They feed it cold, soft spring water through the year. Inside, four copper stills do the work. Only about half of what they produce ends up as single malt. The rest goes into Chivas blended Scotch. Each bottle of the malt is a fraction of the yearly output. Vanilla arrives first on the nose, soft and clean. It is the kind of sweetness that comes from bourbon wood. The palate holds that vanilla and layers caramel over it. Fifteen years in oak leave a dry, woody edge. That edge stops the sweetness from turning syrupy. The finish stays gentle and fades without hurry. Taken neat, both cask influences stay easy to pick apart. Aberlour A'bunadh sits at the sherried end of the range. It is released in batches and matured only in sherry casks. Aberlour 15 years Select Cask Reserve takes the opposite approach. Bourbon wood and sherry wood are set against each other. Fifteen years gives it more depth than the younger releases. You get sherry character without the sherry taking the whole glass. That makes it a good place to meet the distillery's style.
