In 1968 Glen Garioch ran out of water and shut down. Two years later Stanley P. Morrison bought the distillery and called in a water diviner. He found the Silent Spring at Coutens Farm, and Oldmeldrum was back in business. That spring still feeds the stills today. Short fermentations give the spirit a waxy, oily weight that survives a young cask. Single Cask Nation caught one first-fill bourbon hogshead at nine years. It is buttery on the nose, with a firm medicinal streak underneath. Bottled at full strength, it shows what this Highland distillery makes before the wood takes over.

Single Cask Nation picked one first-fill bourbon hogshead and bottled it at nine years old. The strength is 53.9%, straight from the cask. No other cask was blended in to smooth it out. This is a snapshot of one barrel, not a blended house style. The distillery was founded in 1797 in the Garioch, a valley known as the granary of Aberdeenshire. Water nearly ended it. The supply ran dry in 1968 and the site was mothballed. Stanley P. Morrison bought the place in 1970 and brought in a water diviner. That diviner found the Silent Spring at Coutens Farm. Stills were running again by 1972, and the distillery still draws from that spring. Fermentation here is short, around 50 hours, which builds a waxy, oily spirit.
