Facts

Penderyn brought Welsh whisky back to life in 2004, ending more than a century of silence. Its secret is a one-of-a-kind Faraday copper-pot still that produces spirit at 92% ABV. Unusually clean and refined from the first drop. The Madeira Finish takes that spirit further. It rests first in hand-selected bourbon barrels, then moves to Portuguese barriques that once held Madeira wine. Honey and vanilla from the bourbon meet ripe grape and sweet fruit from the Madeira. The result is rich, layered, and entirely its own. Pour it neat.

About the distillery

Distillery

Penderyn

Established in 1998, Penderyn has gained recognition for its unique distillation methods and dedication to creating distinct flavours. The distillery's location in the rugged beauty of the Brecon Beacons provides a natural and pure water source essential to the whisky-making process. Penderyn whisky is crafted using water from the Brecon Beacons' own Penderyn reservoir. One interesting fact about Penderyn Distillery is that it employs a unique single copper-pot distillation method, inspired by traditional Welsh whisky distilling techniques. This approach sets Penderyn whiskies apart from other whisky styles and contributes to their distinctive flavor profiles. Penderyn whiskies offer a range of flavours that appeal to various palates. The flagship expression, Penderyn Madeira Finish, showcases a smooth and rich character with notes of honey, tropical fruits, and subtle spices. The distillery's Brecon Botanicals Gin exhibits a refreshing blend of citrus and herbal botanicals. In addition to their core range, Penderyn Distillery produces limited-edition expressions that captivate whisky enthusiasts with their unique flavors. These limited releases often feature cask finishes, adding layers of complexity and depth to the whisky.

About the Penderyn Madeira Finish

Penderyn Madeira Finish is a single malt Welsh whisky from Wales, produced at the Penderyn distillery in the Brecon Beacons. It sits at 46% ABV and is bottled without colouring or chill filtration. Penderyn distillery opened in 2000, becoming the first whisky producer in Wales for over a hundred years. Its defining piece of kit is a Faraday copper-pot still, designed by Dr. David Faraday. The still draws spirit from the seventh plate of a copper column, concentrating it to 92% ABV. That produces a clean. Refined new-make spirit that carries very little of the heavier chemical compounds found in conventional distillation. The Penderyn Madeira Finish follows a two-stage maturation. The spirit first spends time in hand-selected bourbon barrels, building layers of vanilla, honey, and toasted oak. It then moves into Portuguese barriques that previously held Madeira wine. Those casks add ripe grape, fresh fruit, and a gentle sweetness that weaves through the malty base. Almond and a hint of spice fill out the mid-palate. The finish is long, with lingering caramel and a soft woody warmth. This expression is bottled at 46% ABV. The higher strength lets the flavour carry without distraction. No caramel colouring is added, and the whisky is not chill filtered, so the texture remains oily and full. Among the Penderyn range, the Madeira Finish stands out for its balance of fruit-forward sweetness and clean malt character. Penderyn Madeira Finish is best enjoyed neat in a good glass. That approach lets the contrast between the bourbon base and the Madeira finish come through clearly.
