Springbank fills its heavily peated spirit under the Longrow name, down in Campbeltown. This one spent seven years in bourbon barrels, quietly. Then it moved into refill Malbec barriques from De Toren Private Cellar in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Three years in that wood turned the smoke sweet and dark. You get cocoa, dark chocolate and a flash of strawberry over an earthy peat base. Because the casks were refills, the wine never takes over. Bottled at full strength in December 2020, in a run of 10,000. It is a big whisky that still knows when to stop.

Longrow 10 years Red Refill Malbec Matured is a heavily peated single malt from Campbeltown, Scotland. Springbank distillery makes it, and uses the Longrow name for its smoky spirit. The whisky spent seven years in bourbon barrels first. It then moved into refill Malbec barriques for three more years. Cask strength bottling puts it at 52.5 percent, with no reduction before filling. Campbeltown sits at the foot of the Kintyre peninsula, far down the west coast. Springbank still distils there, one of a handful of survivors in a once crowded town. The wine casks for this release travelled a long way. They came from De Toren Private Cellar in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Those Malbec barriques had already held spirit once before. That refill status matters, because tired wood shapes a whisky without swamping it. The nose opens on cocoa and dark chocolate, with a savoury malty edge underneath. Fresh fruit follows, strawberry mostly, bright against the smoke. The palate turns thicker and darker. Chocolate returns with an earthy, damp peat note behind it. A salty streak runs through the middle and keeps things lively. The finish dries out slowly and leaves cocoa dust on the tongue. Longrow 10 years Red Refill Malbec Matured was bottled on 1 December 2020, in a run of 10,000. The refill casks are the real point of difference. First fill wine wood can bury a peated spirit under jam. These barriques had given up much of their colour and sweetness already.
