Hazelburn takes its name from a historic Campbeltown distillery that shut its doors in 1925. Springbank revived it in 1997 as a triple-distilled, unpeated malt. This particular batch found a second home in a refill cask that once held Barolo wine. That wine comes from Nebbiolo grapes grown in Italy's Piedmont region. It leaves its mark on the whisky: fresh fruit, spice, and a black pepper kick around the citrus and vanilla. Barley still shows through, oily and malty underneath. Hazelburn

Hazelburn carries the name of a once-mighty Campbeltown distillery in Scotland that ran from the early 1800s until 1925. In its prime it was the largest in the town, with the writer Alfred Barnard noting its huge output when he visited in 1885. The name vanished when the original works closed. It was revived at Springbank, the last of the old Campbeltown distilleries still working. Springbank set aside a small share of its time to make this spirit, first running it in 1997. The first bottling appeared in 2005 as an eight-year-old. What sets Hazelburn apart is how it is made. The spirit is triple distilled and left completely unpeated, unusual in a region known for smoke. That extra distillation gives a lighter, creamier and softer style than its smokier Springbank stablemates.

Unlike its peated stablemates, Hazelburn favours a lighter, more delicate spirit from the very first distillation. This bottling spent six years in ex-bourbon wood before resting in a refill Barolo wine cask. Bottled at 57.9% ABV, it shows citrus, vanilla, and barley alongside the wine's deeper fruit and spice. Hazelburn takes its name from a Campbeltown distillery that closed in 1925. It was one of more than thirty distilleries that once worked this stretch of the Kintyre peninsula. Springbank revived the name in 1997 for a new unpeated, triple-distilled style. Very few of Campbeltown's old distilleries survive today, Springbank chief among them. Springbank is the only Scottish distillery that malts its own barley and bottles every drop on site. Barolo wine casks are unusual for Scotch whisky, more common in Italian cellars than Scottish warehouses. Made from Nebbiolo grapes grown in Piedmont, Barolo is a deep, tannic red wine with its own reputation for structure. Ex-bourbon maturation gives Hazelburn 9 years Barolo Cask its base of vanilla and lemon, oily and malty at heart. The wine cask then adds sweet fresh fruit, orange peel, and a savoury, meatycereal edge that lingers into the finish. Black pepper and a touch of spice keep the whole thing lively rather than heavy.
