Facts

Hazelburn is the gentle one from Springbank in Campbeltown. The team triple-distils it and skips the peat, so the spirit comes through soft and clean. That extra still gives it a lighter, rounder feel than its smoky neighbours. You get apple and lemongrass first, then caramel, vanilla and a faint floral lift. A whisper of brine and sea salt reminds you the town sits beside the sea. The name borrows from a long-gone local distillery that closed in the 1920s. Pour it neat and let the light oak and gentle spice settle. It rewards a slow, unhurried glass.

About the distillery

Distillery

Hazelburn

Hazelburn carries the name of a once-mighty Campbeltown distillery in Scotland that ran from the early 1800s until 1925. In its prime it was the largest in the town, with the writer Alfred Barnard noting its huge output when he visited in 1885. The name vanished when the original works closed. It was revived at Springbank, the last of the old Campbeltown distilleries still working. Springbank set aside a small share of its time to make this spirit, first running it in 1997. The first bottling appeared in 2005 as an eight-year-old. What sets Hazelburn apart is how it is made. The spirit is triple distilled and left completely unpeated, unusual in a region known for smoke. That extra distillation gives a lighter, creamier and softer style than its smokier Springbank stablemates.

About the Hazelburn 8 years

Hazelburn 8 years is an unpeated single malt whisky from Campbeltown, on the west coast of Scotland. It is made at the Springbank distillery. One of the last working producers in a town that once held more than thirty. What sets Hazelburn apart is triple distillation. Most Scotch is distilled twice. The third pass strips out heavier notes and leaves a softer, brighter spirit. There is no peat smoke here at all, which makes this whisky a true outlier in its coastal home. The name honours a historic Campbeltown distillery that closed in the 1920s. Springbank revived it as a brand, with the first new spirit distilled in the late 1990s. Hazelburn 8 years carries that heritage in every glass. In the aroma you find apple, fresh lemongrass and a floral lift. The palate brings caramel, vanilla and graham cracker sweetness. Light oak and gentle spice sit underneath, with allspice adding warmth. A touch of brine and sea salt nods to the seaside town it comes from. The woody, lightly oaked finish stays clean and approachable. At eight years old, this single malt Scotch whisky shows real character without weight. It suits both newcomers and seasoned drinkers who want something different. Drink it neat to taste the full range. Hazelburn 8 years is a quiet gem from a legendary distillery. It rewards anyone who seeks out something a little unusual. Each glass offers a soft, clean taste of the seaside town. It proves that Campbeltown can make a delicate dram as easily as a bold one.
