About the Deanston 12 years

Deanston 12 years is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky from one of Scotland's most distinctive distilleries. Deanston sits on the banks of the River Teith, eight miles from Stirling. In a building that was once a cotton mill designed by Richard Arkwright in 1785. The distillery converted to whisky production in 1966 and still operates without computers. Its 11-ton open-topped mash tun is the only one of its size in Scotland. The spirit matures in a vast vaulted warehouse that was originally the weaving shed. Deanston is also the only distillery in Scotland entirely self-sufficient in electricity. Powered by an on-site hydro facility fed by the River Teith. Deanston uses organic barley grown to strict standards, which shapes the spirit from the ground up. The clean, naturally soft River Teith also plays a role in the character of the whisky. These raw ingredients give the spirit a clean cereal base that carries the oak influence well. Deanston 12 years is matured exclusively in bourbon casks. The result is an approachable but characterful whisky. Notes of caramel and brown sugar lead the way. Baking spice and cinnamon follow, alongside softer touches of dried apricot and cereal. A chocolatey warmth builds toward the finish, with a woody dryness that lingers. Vanilla and gentle oak round out the experience in the final moments. This bottling is released at 46.3% ABV, with no chill filtration and no added colouring. That means the whisky reaches your glass exactly as the cask intended. Pour it neat and give it a minute to open up. The flavours shift and settle as you sip.
