Balvenie 14 years Peated Triple Cask is a peated single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside. Most whisky from this part of Scotland is unpeated, so smoke here is the exception rather than the rule. The spirit spends 14 years in wood before bottling at 48.3%. It reaches that strength without chill filtration, so the texture stays thick and slightly oily on the tongue. In the 1950s the distillery ran a batch of heavily peated malt, which few Speyside producers bothered with. The idea then sat unused for decades. In the early 2000s the distillery began recreating that smoky spirit, and the experiment became a fixture. One week every year is now Peat Week, when only peated barley goes through the mash. Everything smoky in this bottle starts in those few days. The nose leads with fresh fruit rather than smoke. Nectarine and banana come first, then vanilla and a warm prickle of clove. The palate turns brighter, with pineapple and sweet malty grain underneath. Peat threads through all of it, low and steady, never loud. The finish is long and gently spiced. Nutmeg arrives with a floral lift, then a cool touch of mint over marshmallow softness. Balvenie 14 years Peated Triple Cask takes its name from the three woods behind it. First-fill bourbon casks set the vanilla tone. Refill bourbon keeps the spirit's own character in view. Sherry wood adds the darker edge at the back. The rest of the Balvenie range is unpeated, which makes this release the odd one out. It went to travel retail in 2017 and stays harder to track down.
