Facts

Few distilleries still do the old work by hand, but Balvenie does. It is one of only seven Scottish distilleries that keep a malting floor. And the only one practising all five rare crafts on site. That means barley, malting, a coppersmith, a cooperage, and a Malt Master under one roof. For this bottling, mature spirit rests in port pipes that once held fine port. The wine softens the oak and lends notes of date and dried fruit. You also find honey, plum, and a warm thread of cinnamon. Pour it neat and let the fruit unfold slowly.

About the distillery

Distillery

Balvenie

The Balvenie distillery is located in Dufftown, Scotland and was founded in 1892. It is one of the few distilleries in Scotland that still has its own floor maltings, where the barley is malted by hand. Balvenie's range of whiskies includes both peated and unpeated expressions, and they are aged in a variety of casks, including ex-bourbon, sherry, and rum casks. The distillery is also known for its experimental cask finishes, such as its PortWood and Caribbean Cask expressions. Balvenie has won numerous awards for its whiskies.

About the Balvenie 21 years Portwood

Balvenie 21 years Portwood is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Speyside region of Scotland. Made at the Balvenie distillery near Dufftown, it spends 21 years maturing before a final rest in port pipes. Those casks once held rich port wine. The Malt Master selects each one by hand. He moves the whisky across only when the marriage of spirit and wood tastes right. That patience is what gives this aged single malt its gentle, fruit-led depth. What sets the Balvenie distillery apart is how much it still does itself. It is one of only seven distilleries in Scotland that keeps its own malting floor. It is also the only one that practises all five rare crafts on site. Those crafts are growing barley, malting, an on-site coppersmith, a working cooperage, and a resident Malt Master. Very few places in the whisky world can make that claim today. The port finish shapes the whole character of this Speyside single malt. Time in port pipes brings out date and dried fruit, layered over ripe plum. Honey runs underneath, soft and rounded. A little cinnamon adds warmth without heat. The oak stays in the background, polished rather than sharp. Each sip feels mellow, the edges worn smooth by two decades in cask. Balvenie 21 years Portwood drinks beautifully on its own. Pour it neat into a glass and give it a minute to open. The fruit lifts first, then the honey and spice settle in. It is a whisky for slow evenings and unhurried company. At 21 years old, it rewards anyone who takes their time. This is a fine introduction to what careful cask finishing can do.
