Facts

White dog is the raw spirit that leaves the still before any barrel ever touches it. Buffalo Trace White Dog Straight is that spirit, bottled at cask strength. At 62.5% ABV, it is pure rye character with nowhere to hide. Cinnamon and black pepper hit first. Corn sweetness follows. Then a woody warmth that reminds you this is the same liquid that becomes something far more aged. Drinking it neat gives you a direct line to how American rye whisky begins its life. It is bracing, honest, and unlike anything matured.

About the Buffalo Trace White Dog Straight

Buffalo Trace White Dog Straight is an unaged rye spirit from Buffalo Trace. One of the most storied distilleries in the United States. It is bottled straight from the still at 62.5% ABV, with no barrel ageing to soften or transform it. This is American rye whisky at its most direct. Buffalo Trace has been distilling on its Kentucky site since at least 1812. It operated through Prohibition under a medicinal licence and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2013. That heritage runs deep, but Buffalo Trace White Dog Straight strips it all back to the beginning. You taste the grain itself before any oak has touched it. On the nose, the spirit leads with cinnamon and fresh-ground pepper. The corn character is clearly present: sweet, almost floral, with a faint dried fruit quality underneath. The palate is bold and spicy, with wood and vanilla already hinting at where a barrel-aged version might go. The finish is warm and woody, with a lingering spice. Rye grain gives American whisky its defining character. Even before the barrel, the spice is already present in the new-make spirit. This expression shows why rye is prized for its backbone and directness. The pepper and cinnamon come from the grain itself, not the wood. Buffalo Trace White Dog Straight is best enjoyed neat, with patience. The high ABV rewards slow sipping. A small drop of water tames the heat and opens the sweeter grain notes. It suits drinkers who want to understand rye whisky from the ground up.
