Royal Canadian Small Batch is a Canadian whisky bottled at 40% ABV. It carries the Royal Canadian name and is made in Canada, then blended and bottled by the Sazerac Company. There is no age statement on the label. Canadian law still requires a minimum of three years in wood. Small batch here means the blend is drawn from a limited set of barrels, not a warehouse-wide vatting. The blending desk matters more here than any single still. Drew Mayville runs it. He spent 23 years as master blender at Seagram's before moving to Sazerac. Twenty-three years is a long apprenticeship in one style, and it shows in the balance. Sazerac says each batch uses the best barrels from its finest aged whiskies. Every bottle is then filled by hand, which is unusual at this price. Sweet arrives first. Maple syrup and butterscotch lead, backed by toffee and a creamy vanilla note. Underneath sits the grain itself, dry and cereal-like, which keeps the sugar in check. A flash of lemon and light fresh fruit lifts the middle. The finish is short and warm, with maple and grain fading together. There is a faint medicinal edge at the very end, more herbal than harsh. Most Canadian whisky at this level is blended in vast quantities for consistency. Royal Canadian Small Batch works the other way, pulling from fewer casks each time. That means small differences between batches, which some drinkers actively want. It also keeps the maple and toffee character forward rather than sanded down. If you want a gentle Canadian whisky with a named blender behind it, this is a sensible place to start.
