Black Velvet 8 years Reserve is a blended Canadian whisky from the Black Velvet distillery in Lethbridge, Alberta. This Canada-born blend carries eight years of patient ageing. The name itself tells a story. In the late 1940s, Master Distiller Jack Napier renamed the spirit from Black Label to Black Velvet. He felt it had a velvety taste and a real smoothness on the tongue. That smoothness still defines the bottle today. The blend leans on rye and soft grain whisky, then rounds it off with gentle oak. You meet caramel first, warm and easy. Butterscotch follows close behind. A thread of maple syrup runs underneath, a nod to its Canadian roots. Vanilla rounds out the middle, keeping everything sweet and balanced. The Black Velvet distillery sits on the prairie in Lethbridge, Alberta. It has changed hands many times over the decades. Heaven Hill took ownership in 2019, buying the brand from Constellation Brands. The distillery has long built its reputation on approachable, well-made Canadian whisky. The eight-year Reserve is its more considered expression, given extra time to settle and soften. On the palate this is gentle, grain-forward whisky. The rye adds a faint spice without ever turning sharp. Oak lends structure and a dry, clean finish. The sweet notes of caramel and vanilla keep the whole thing rounded. It is the kind of pour that asks nothing of you and gives back plenty. Drink Black Velvet 8 years Reserve neat, in a simple glass. Let it sit a moment and the maple syrup and butterscotch grow clearer. This blended Canadian whisky is an honest, everyday dram. It is smooth, sweet and quietly satisfying from the first sip onward.
