Facts

Six years before it ever holds whisky, a Tamdhu Distinction cask is a white oak tree in North America. The wood travels to Spain's sherry triangle. There coopers cut it, air-dry it in the sun and season it with Oloroso. Only then does the cask reach the distillery itself. The spirit goes in bright and new, and the years do the rest. All that work shows up in the glass. Cinnamon and vanilla lead, then plum, dates and chocolate arrive with sharp citrus behind them. The colour is natural amber, drawn entirely from the wood.

About the Tamdhu Distinction

Tamdhu Distinction is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky from the Tamdhu distillery. It is the first release in the Quercus Alba Distinction series, bottled at 48% with no added colouring. The whole batch matured in first-fill American oak Oloroso sherry casks. That single choice of wood shapes everything about it. Nothing here is finished or fiddled with late. The cask does the work from the day the spirit goes in. The distillery stands beside the River Spey and follows one rule above all others. Every cask it fills is an Oloroso sherry cask, European or American oak. No other Scotch whisky brand matures its entire output that way. Sherry maturation is not a finishing touch here. It is the whole method, applied to every bottle the distillery sells. For this release, only first-fill American oak casks were used. Warming cinnamon and vanilla arrive first, backed by sharp citrus and cherry. The palate is rich and rounded, with plum, dates and chocolate rolling through. Soft oak sits underneath rather than on top, which keeps the sweetness in check. Nothing about it feels heavy or sticky. Fruity notes carry the finish and fade slowly. The amber colour is natural, pulled straight from the wood, so what you see matches what you taste. Across the rest of the range, Tamdhu fills both European and American oak sherry casks. Tamdhu Distinction narrows that down to American oak alone. That is the point of the Quercus Alba series: one wood, no blending of influences. The result is a rounded character, with more fruit and sweetness on show. It is a limited batch, sold through specialist retailers in a handful of countries rather than everywhere.
