Facts

A water wheel once drove every machine at Glendullan, powered by the River Fiddich running past the distillery. That river link is why Diageo chose the Dufftown malt for House Tully, the lords of Riverrun. Their leaping fish sits on the label. Inside is a Speyside single malt built on long fermentation and slow distillation. The spirit comes out fruity and light on its feet. Expect baked apples, toffee and vanilla, then a dusting of cinnamon. It is an easy dram with a real story behind it.

About the distillery

Distillery

Glendullan

William Williams, an Aberdeen blender and broker, built Glendullan in 1897 as the seventh distillery to rise in Dufftown, Speyside, Scotland. Success came fast. By 1902 the whisky was being supplied to King Edward VII by royal request, a rare honour for such a young distillery. A second distillery was built alongside the original in 1972, and the two ran together until the older site closed in 1985. Today Glendullan draws its water from the Conval Hill springs. Three wash stills and three spirit stills produce whisky mainly destined for Diageo's blends. Some of the spirit does reach drinkers unblended. Diageo bottles it as The Singleton of Glendullan, a fruity and approachable single malt made specifically for the American market.

About the Glendullan Singleton Reserve

Glendullan Singleton Reserve is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky, bottled at 40% ABV. It comes from the Glendullan distillery in Dufftown, in the north east of Scotland. The bottling carries no age statement. It arrived in 2018 as part of Diageo's Game of Thrones Collection. Eight single malts marked the final season of the HBO series. This one stands for House Tully, the river lords of Riverrun. The distillery sits on the banks of the River Fiddich, below the wooded hills of Dufftown. The river shaped more than the address. A water wheel once powered the entire site, harnessing the current that runs past the door. That is the link Diageo drew to House Tully and its Riverrun seat. Production runs slowly, with long fermentations and unhurried distillation. That pushes the spirit towards fruit and fresh grass. Baked apples and toffee lead the aroma, with a dusting of marshmallow behind. Malty sweetness carries the middle, backed by vanilla and soft caramel. Spice comes late, more cinnamon and clove than pepper. The texture is thin rather than oily. It fades quickly, gently oaky, with a last flick of banana. Nothing here shouts. This is a light, sweet Speyside malt that rewards attention rather than demanding it. Outside the Singleton range, Glendullan rarely appears under its own name. Glendullan Singleton Reserve is the entry point to that range. It sits below the 12, 15 and 18 year old bottlings. No age statement and a low price mean it trades depth for approachability. The collector angle matters too. The bottling is now discontinued, so a complete set of eight is harder to assemble.
