Facts

Wolfburn sits in Thurso, near the very top of mainland Scotland. The name revives an original distillery that first ran back in 1821. The modern version started small and stubborn, hand-built by a tiny team. Northland matures in American oak quarter casks, which speed up the contact between spirit and wood. The result is gentle and clean, lightly peated to just a trace. You get pear and vanilla first, then a soft grassy edge and a flicker of black pepper. There is a savoury grain note underneath. Pour it neat and let the sea-air freshness do the talking.

About the distillery

Distillery

Wolfburn

Just west of Thurso, on the far north coast of Scotland, an original Wolfburn distillery opened in 1821 and grew into the largest in Caithness. It fell silent in the 1860s and lay forgotten for more than a century. In 2013 a private consortium brought the name back to life. The new distillery sits in the Highland region. About 350 metres from the old site, and draws its water from the Wolf Burn stream that gives it its name. The spirit is double distilled and bottled on site. This is the most northerly whisky distillery on the Scottish mainland. The first single malt was released globally in 2016 and quickly collected gold medals at international competitions.

About the Wolfburn Northland

Wolfburn Northland is a single malt Scotch whisky from Wolfburn, a Highland distillery in Thurso, Scotland. It comes from near the very top of the mainland. The cold North Sea sits just beyond the warehouse walls. The distillery carries an old name. An original Wolfburn first ran here back in 1821. It then fell silent for well over a century. The modern site reopened in 2013 and still does much by hand. The spirit is distilled, matured and bottled on one plot of land in Caithness. Northland matures in American oak quarter casks. These smaller barrels give the young spirit more contact with the wood. That builds flavour faster than a full-size cask would. The whisky is bottled at 46%, with natural colour and no chill filtering. Peat is barely there, just a whisper of smoke. In the glass, Wolfburn Northland leads with pear and soft vanilla. A grassy, floral lift follows close behind. Then comes a turn of black pepper and warm spice. A savoury grain note sits underneath it all. The texture is light and clean, never heavy on the tongue. The finish is sweet and clean, fading with a trace of gentle peat. It leaves you ready for the next sip. This is an easy whisky to like and a hard one to put down. It rewards a slow, neat pour at room temperature. Newcomers find it approachable from the first sip. Seasoned drinkers respect how much character Wolfburn packs into a young malt from Scotland's far north.
