Facts

Two names sit on this label, and both belong to real people. Jimmy Russell and his son Eddie have given Wild Turkey more than 100 years between them. Their rye is one of the few in the range with an age statement on the front. Six years in oak, 45% in the glass, and a mash that carries more corn than most ryes do. The result is soft where you expect sharp. Vanilla and maple syrup come first, spice and leather sit behind, and caramel lingers.

About the distillery

Distillery

Wild Turkey

Wild Turkey Distillery, located in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, has a rich heritage that spans over 150 years. Wild Turkey has established itself as a prominent name in the world of American whiskey. Nestled along the Kentucky River, the distillery showcases a picturesque setting that adds to the charm of its whisky production. The pristine limestone-filtered water sourced from the river and the region's unique climate contribute to the distinct flavours found in Wild Turkey bourbons. The Wild Turkey Distillery is that it has maintained its traditional production methods throughout its history. The whiskey is crafted using a high proportion of corn in the mash bill, aged in new charred oak barrels, and undergoes a longer-than-average maturation period. Wild Turkey bourbons are celebrated for their bold and robust flavours. The flagship expression, Wild Turkey 101, offers a balance of sweet caramel, vanilla, and oak with a spicy kick. It exemplifies the distillery's commitment to producing full-bodied bourbons with a higher alcohol content. Other expressions, such as Wild Turkey Rare Breed and Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit, showcase a range of complex flavors including rich dark fruit, toasted nuts, and hints of cinnamon and clove. Each bourbon is crafted with meticulous attention to detail and a dedication to preserving the distillery's heritage.

About the Wild Turkey 6 years Russell's Reserve

Wild Turkey 6 years Russell's Reserve is a small batch rye whisky from Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. The distillery ages it for at least six years, then bottles it at 45%. That age statement matters. It is the only standard rye in the range that carries one. No colouring is added, so the colour in the glass comes from the barrel alone. Six years is a long stretch for a Kentucky rye. The name honours Jimmy Russell and his son Eddie. Between them, the father and son have more than 100 years of service at the distillery. Jimmy is not a rye drinker himself. He still shaped the house style, and that is why this rye leans toward bourbon. The mash bill runs 51% rye, 37% corn and 12% malted barley. Corn at that level rounds off the grain and lets sweetness through. Dry spice leads on the nose, with a whiff of old leather behind it. Nothing shouts. The first sip is sweet in a plain, direct way, all vanilla and maple syrup. Sugar builds through the middle of the palate. Caramel and dried fruit carry the long close, along with a faint sherry sweetness. Rye pepper arrives late rather than early. It fades slowly and leaves the mouth warm. Within the wider range, the Russell's Reserve line sits a step above the core bottles. Wild Turkey 6 years Russell's Reserve is the rye that opens it. Small batching means barrels are married in modest numbers, which keeps the flavour steady across bottles. Six years is enough time for the wood to speak without drowning the grain. That balance is the point of this bottling, and it is why the rye reads clearly at 45%.
