Distillery
Singleton of Glen Ord
Thomas MacKenzie leased part of his Highland estate near Muir of Ord in 1838, giving local farmers a legal home for their barley. The site sat on the Black Isle, watered by Loch nam Bonnach and Loch nan Eun. Nine small licensed distilleries were already competing nearby, but this one outlasted them all. Today the distillery makes unpeated single malt destined for both Johnnie Walker blends and the Singleton of Glen Ord range, sold mainly in Southeast Asia. Its whisky is soft, honeyed and easy to drink, a contrast to the smoky drams made further west. The real oddity is next door. In 1968 Glen Ord built a large drum malting plant that still supplies seven other distilleries across Scotland with malt today. That makes it one of the biggest maltings in the country.
