Redbreast
The name Redbreast goes back to 1912, when a Dublin spirits merchant in Ireland first sold a whisky under that label. The chairman of Gilbey's was a keen birdwatcher, and he named it after the robin redbreast. It is one of the more charming origin stories in Irish whisky. Today Redbreast is made at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork, Ireland. It is a single pot still whisky, a style historically unique to Ireland. The mash blends both malted and unmalted barley, and the spirit is distilled three times in copper pot stills. That unmalted barley gives the whisky its signature creamy texture and spicy bite. Maturation happens in both American bourbon casks and European sherry casks, which adds a nutty, fruity depth. Redbreast is the best-selling single pot still Irish whisky in the world.
