Distillery
Olt Pulteney is a distillery located in the coastal town of Wick, in the far north-eastern region of Scotland. Founded in 1826, it is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, and it has a long and storied history of producing high-quality single malt Scotch whisky. Olt Pulteney's are known for its distinctive flavour profile, which is often described as maritime or salty, due to the distillery's proximity to the sea. This flavour is created by the use of locally sourced barley, traditional pot stills, and the maturation process in oak casks that have been previously used to mature bourbon, sherry or wine.

Old Pulteney 12 Year Old is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky made at the northernmost mainland distillery in Wick, Caithness. Founded in 1826, the distillery is just metres from the sea, and its coastal location gives its whisky a distinctive salty character often called "The Maritime Malt." This whisky is matured for 12 years in ex-bourbon American oak barrels that were air-dried and individually selected. The coastal warehouses expose casks to fresh sea air throughout maturation. It is bottled at 40% ABV, chill-filtered, and includes added colouring for consistency across batches. The colour is a light golden amber with a slight copper tint. On the nose, expect medium to high intensity aromas of sea salt, honey, vanilla, poached pear, mango sorbet, and caramelised sugar, with a subtle metallic or parmesan edge. On the palate, the whisky is dry and smooth. Flavours include honeyed toffee, creamy malt, citrus peel, red apple, sea salt, and white pepper spice. A faint smoky note may appear. The finish is long and dry, with barley sweetness, brine, gentle oak tannins, lemon zest, and maritime spice lingering. Old Pulteney 12 has earned awards including Gold at the 2019 International Wine & Spirit Competition (95 pts), Silver at the International Spirits Challenge in multiple years, Gold at The Scotch Whisky Masters (Highlands & Islands up to 12 years) in 2019, and Double Gold (96 pts) at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2024. This whisky is ideal for those who enjoy a maritime-influenced dram. It is approachable for beginners yet offers enough depth for seasoned drinkers. Try it neat, or with a few drops of water to soften the edge and enhance coastal and citrus notes.
