Makers Mark is a wheated bourbon made in the United States, distilled at the Makers Mark distillery in Loretto, Kentucky. This United States bourbon stands apart for one key reason. It leans on soft red winter wheat instead of the rye most bourbons use. That wheated mash bill is the whole point. Wheat rounds off the sharp edges you often get in young bourbon. The result is a softer, sweeter pour built on honey and vanilla. Warm oak runs underneath, giving the whisky structure without harshness. The distillery itself has a great story. Bill Samuels Sr. founded it in 1953 and famously burned the family's old recipe to start fresh. His wife, Margie Samuels, named the brand and designed the label. She also created the hand-dipped red wax seal, inspired by cognac bottles she collected. Every bottle is still dipped in that signature red wax by hand at the distillery. The team also rotates each barrel by hand during ageing, moving heavy casks through the rickhouse. It is slow work, but it shapes the final character. In the glass, this bourbon is gentle and inviting. Expect honey, vanilla, and a soft, bready sweetness up front. Oak and a touch of woody spice follow, with a creamy, malty finish. The whisky is rounded rather than fiery, which is why Makers Mark works so well neat. Pour it straight and let the sweet, oaky notes open slowly. The creamy finish stays gentle and never bites. It remains one of the most approachable bourbons you can buy from the United States.
