Facts

Macallan built this whisky around a friendship with El Celler de Can Roca, a Catalan restaurant the world's critics adore. Master Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno teamed up with the three Roca brothers, and each man chose his own casks. Seven cask types from four sherry bodegas went into the blend. Picked for the flavours a chef, a sommelier and a pastry chef each loved. The result is layered and generous. You meet brown sugar, ginger and gingerbread first. Then date and dried apricot, with chocolate and a curl of leather underneath. It is a malt with a clear point of view. Pour it neat and let it talk.

Macallan

The Macallan is a renowned distillery located in Craigellachie, Scotland. It was founded in 1824 and is known for producing single malt whisky using only the finest sherry oak casks from Spain. The Macallan offers a range of expressions, with age statements ranging from 12 to over 50 years, as well as a variety of limited edition and special releases. The distillery's flagship expression is the Macallan 18 Year Old, which is matured in a combination of first-fill and refill sherry casks. The Macallan's whisky-making process is carefully controlled and includes the use of small stills, long fermentation times, and the selection of only the best casks. In 2018, a rare bottle of 60-year-old Macallan sold for a record-breaking £1.2 million ($1.5 million USD) at auction, making it the most expensive whisky ever sold.

About the Macallan Edition No.2

Macallan Edition No.2 is a single malt Scotch whisky from Macallan, a distillery in the Speyside region of Scotland. It was made to celebrate a partnership with El Celler de Can Roca, a famous restaurant in Spain. That kitchen connection runs right through the bottle. Master Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno worked with the three Roca brothers on this Macallan Edition No.2 release. Each one chose casks that matched his own palate. Dalgarno picked European oak from the Tevesa bodega. Head chef Joan Roca, sommelier Josep Roca and pastry chef Jordi Roca each added their own. In all, seven cask types from four sherry bodegas shaped the spirit. There is no age statement, so the casks tell the whole story. That sherry influence is easy to taste. The whisky opens with brown sugar, caramel and toffee sweetness. Then come waves of ginger, baking spice and warm gingerbread. A little anise and cardamom add a savoury edge. Darker notes of date, dried apricot and dried fruit follow close behind. Underneath sits a gentle layer of chocolate, hazelnut and soft leather. A thread of black tea keeps the finish long and dry. There is a creamy weight to the texture as well. At 48.2% it stays rich and full without feeling heavy. Macallan has built its name on sherry-seasoned oak, and this Speyside single malt shows exactly why. Macallan Edition No.2 is best enjoyed neat, in a glass that lets the aromas climb. Give it time and the layers keep shifting. It suits anyone who already loves sherried single malt Scotch whisky.
