Facts

Macallan built its name on dark, sherried whisky from Speyside. The Fine Oak range broke that mould. Instead of relying on sherry casks alone, the distillery married three different oak types into one whisky. Two are sherry-seasoned, one is ex-bourbon American oak. That bourbon cask brings a brighter, lighter side to a brand known for richness. The result is gentler and more delicate than you might expect. You catch oranges and peaches first, then a soft handful of raisins and sultanas. Citrus and a little almond sweetness round it out. Pour it neat and let it open slowly.

Macallan

The Macallan is a renowned distillery located in Craigellachie, Scotland. It was founded in 1824 and is known for producing single malt whisky using only the finest sherry oak casks from Spain. The Macallan offers a range of expressions, with age statements ranging from 12 to over 50 years, as well as a variety of limited edition and special releases. The distillery's flagship expression is the Macallan 18 Year Old, which is matured in a combination of first-fill and refill sherry casks. The Macallan's whisky-making process is carefully controlled and includes the use of small stills, long fermentation times, and the selection of only the best casks. In 2018, a rare bottle of 60-year-old Macallan sold for a record-breaking £1.2 million ($1.5 million USD) at auction, making it the most expensive whisky ever sold.

About the Macallan 12 years The Fine Oak

Macallan 12 years The Fine Oak is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Macallan distillery in Speyside, Scotland. It marked a bold turn for a name long tied to heavily sherried whisky. This twelve-year-old single malt is matured in three separate oak cask types. Two are sherry-seasoned oak, European and American. The third is American ex-bourbon oak, and that is what sets this expression apart. That triple-cask approach gives the whisky a lighter, more delicate character. Macallan calls oak the single greatest contributor to its colour, aroma and flavour. Here the bourbon cask lifts the spirit with vanilla and gentle citrus. The sherry casks add depth underneath. The two sides meet in the glass without one overpowering the other. On the nose you find orange and ripe fresh fruit, with a soft whiff of honey. The palate carries dried fruit, raisins & sultanas, and a touch of almond. Light toasted oak and a hint of spice sit behind the sweetness. It stays balanced and easy to follow from start to finish. The finish is medium and clean, with fresh oak and a fading citrus note. This is an approachable, smooth single malt that suits both newcomers and longtime Speyside fans. Drink Macallan 12 years The Fine Oak neat, in a tulip glass. Give it a few minutes in the glass and the aromas open further. The malty sweetness and soft fruit linger gently on the close. It rewards slow, unhurried sipping rather than a quick pour. It needs nothing else to show its quiet, well-judged character. Macallan 12 years The Fine Oak remains a benchmark Speyside dram.
