Lagg Heavily Peated New Make Spirit comes from the Lagg distillery on the Isle of Arran. In the Island region of Scotland. This is unaged spirit, the clear liquid that flows from the still before any cask gets involved. It shows you what the distillery is really about. The peat is dialled right up. Barley malted to 50 ppm gives a smoke that hits hard and lingers long. Lagg distillery opened its doors in June 2019, near a village with a hidden whisky past. Smugglers once ran illicit stills across this southern corner of Arran. The modern Lagg pays tribute to that heritage. It was built by Isle of Arran Distillers as a heavily peated sister to their Lochranza site. The new make here runs about two and a half times smokier than the spirit made up north. Pour Lagg Heavily Peated New Make Spirit and the nose comes out swinging. Iodine and medicinal notes lead the charge, sharp and coastal. Beneath that smoke sits something greener. There is a vegetative, earthy quality, with fresh pine and damp wood. Sweetness pushes through too. Soft peach and bright fresh fruit cut against the heavier, woody edges. On the palate this single-malt spirit is bold and unpolished. The high strength carries waves of earth and tarry smoke. Vanilla offers a gentle, creamy counterpoint to all that intensity. Wood and pine give it grip and structure. This is whisky character laid bare, with no cask to soften or hide a thing. For whisky lovers, new make like this is a rare treat. It shows the engine room of a young distillery at full throttle. Drink it neat and let the smoke unfold slowly. You are tasting the foundation of every future Lagg single malt, captured at the very moment of birth.
