Facts

Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown brought Kilkerran to life in 2004, reviving a town once famous for dozens of distilleries. Most of the year, the stills run lightly peated spirit. But one week each cycle, the malt is heavily peated — and that week produces this. At cask strength, the smoke hits first, then banana and caramel soften the blow. Underneath, there is brine, dark chocolate, and dried fruit. It is a bold, layered dram from a young distillery already carving out its own identity.

Kilkerran

Kilkerran Distillery, located in Campbeltown, Scotland, is a relatively young distillery. Established in 2004, Kilkerran has revived the whisky-making tradition in Campbeltown, a region renowned for its rich history in the whisky industry. Situated on the picturesque Kintyre Peninsula, Kilkerran Distillery draws inspiration from the region's coastal influences and peaty characteristics. The whiskies produced at Kilkerran exhibit a unique balance of maritime brininess, subtle smoke, and fruity sweetness. One interesting fact about Kilkerran Distillery is that it operates as a sister distillery to Glengyle Distillery. Glengyle Distillery was resurrected in 2004, and under the guidance of the Mitchell family, the same family behind the iconic Springbank Distillery, it was transformed into Kilkerran Distillery. This association adds to the distillery's rich heritage and expertise. Kilkerran whiskies offer a range of flavours that appeal to various palates. The core expression, Kilkerran 12 Year Old, showcases a harmonious blend of citrus notes, maltiness, gentle peat smoke, and hints of vanilla. The whiskies from Kilkerran often display complexity, depth, and a well-rounded character.

About the Kilkerran Heavily Peated

Kilkerran Heavily Peated is a cask-strength single malt Scotch whisky from Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown, Scotland. Kilkerran is the whisky brand of Mitchell's Glengyle. The distillery reopened in 2004 after decades of silence in a town that once boasted over 30 working distilleries. The Kilkerran Heavily Peated expression is a limited release, produced during just one week of every 12-week production cycle. The rest of the year, Glengyle runs a lightly peated spirit. That single peated week yields something strikingly different. The malt is kilned to around 45 PPM. That gives the whisky a bold, direct smokiness. It stands apart from the rest of the Kilkerran range. At 60.9% ABV, this is a whisky of real intensity. On the nose, banana and honey emerge through the smoke, with floral and herbal hints close behind. The palate opens with peat and brine, then reveals caramel, dark chocolate, and dried fruit. Cardamom and ginger add spice to the finish, which lingers with camphor and malty warmth. Kilkerran sits in Campbeltown, a peninsula on Scotland's west coast with a long distilling history. The name Kilkerran comes from the ancient Gaelic name for Campbeltown itself. Glengyle was originally built in 1872. Its revival has helped restore Campbeltown as a recognised Scotch whisky region. The distillery is small, and each release reflects its growing confidence. For fans of peated Scotch whisky, Kilkerran Heavily Peated remains a compelling find. It is a cask-strength dram with genuine character. The combination of coastal Atlantic influence and heavy peat gives it a distinctive profile. Each new bottling is a snapshot of Glengyle finding its voice.
