Facts

Glengyle distillery in Campbeltown stood silent for eighty years. It reopened in 2004, and this is the whisky that came out of the revival. Sixteen years in cask have pushed the spirit into drier, darker territory. There is polished wood and sandalwood here, plus a musty note like an old cellar door. Underneath sits a steady sweetness that stops the whole thing turning severe. Springbank, just down the road, takes most of the attention in this town. This bottling is the quieter argument for Campbeltown. Pour it neat and give it a few minutes to open.

Kilkerran

Kilkerran Distillery, located in Campbeltown, Scotland, is a relatively young distillery. Established in 2004, Kilkerran has revived the whisky-making tradition in Campbeltown, a region renowned for its rich history in the whisky industry. Situated on the picturesque Kintyre Peninsula, Kilkerran Distillery draws inspiration from the region's coastal influences and peaty characteristics. The whiskies produced at Kilkerran exhibit a unique balance of maritime brininess, subtle smoke, and fruity sweetness. One interesting fact about Kilkerran Distillery is that it operates as a sister distillery to Glengyle Distillery. Glengyle Distillery was resurrected in 2004, and under the guidance of the Mitchell family, the same family behind the iconic Springbank Distillery, it was transformed into Kilkerran Distillery. This association adds to the distillery's rich heritage and expertise. Kilkerran whiskies offer a range of flavours that appeal to various palates. The core expression, Kilkerran 12 Year Old, showcases a harmonious blend of citrus notes, maltiness, gentle peat smoke, and hints of vanilla. The whiskies from Kilkerran often display complexity, depth, and a well-rounded character.

About the Kilkerran 16 years Single Malt

Kilkerran 16 years Single Malt is a single malt whisky from Campbeltown, on the west coast of Scotland. It comes from Glengyle distillery, which puts the Kilkerran name on every bottle. The spirit spends sixteen years in cask, mostly ex-bourbon wood. Bottling happens at 46% ABV, with no chill filtration. That leaves the oils and the weight in the glass, and you can feel it. Glengyle sat closed for eighty years before spirit ran there again. The doors opened once more in 2004, and Campbeltown returned to three working distilleries. Springbank is the sister distillery, a short walk down the same road. A sixteen year old bottling from this site is a recent possibility. The stock simply did not exist before. Everything in the glass was laid down after the revival. The nose opens fresh, then turns musty in an old warehouse way. Sandalwood follows, dry and faintly perfumed, sitting over the oak. On the palate the wood is clear but never harsh. A sweet thread runs underneath and keeps the balance. There is a vegetative edge too, green and stalky, like damp hay. The finish stays woody and long, drying slowly rather than fading. Nothing about it rushes. Kilkerran 16 years Single Malt is the slower, drier end of the range. The 12 year old sits below it and shows less complexity. Four extra years in cask move the whisky toward resin and dry spice. Both are matured mainly in ex-bourbon wood, so time does the work here, not a new cask type. Non chill filtration keeps the mouthfeel thick enough to carry that weight.
