Facts

The Isle of Jura has one road. It traces the shoreline south, past peat and moss, toward the only distillery on the island. That single road gives this bottling its name and its quiet sense of journey. Fewer than 200 people share this remote place with thousands of red deer. The whisky carries that wildness in its character. It opens peaty and fresh, with a soft medicinal edge and a faintly musty warmth. Time in casks once filled with Pedro Ximénez sherry adds dried apricot and treacle. Pour it neat and let the island do the talking.

About the distillery

Distillery

Jura

Jura is a distillery located on the Isle of Jura, off the west coast of Scotland. It was founded in 1810, but ceased production in the 1900s. In 1963, it was rebuilt and reopened, and has been producing whisky ever since. The distillery produces a range of single malt whiskies, including the Jura 10 Year Old, Jura 16 Year Old, and Jura 21 Year Old. These whiskies are aged in a variety of casks, including ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, giving them a range of flavors and aromas. Jura uses locally sourced barley and water from the nearby Loch a'Bhaile-Mhargaidh in its whisky production. The distillery has its own malting floor and still house, allowing for complete control over the production process.

About the Jura The Road

Jura The Road is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Isle of Jura. An island off the west coast of Scotland. The Jura distillery sits on the island's southeastern corner, the only one of its kind here. Its name comes from a simple truth. On Jura, the community shares a single road. That road hugs the shoreline and heads south toward the distillery. The Isle of Jura is a wild and remote place. Fewer than 200 people live here. They share the island with around 5,000 red deer. There is one road, one pub, and one distillery. That isolation shapes everything about the spirit. Jura has made whisky in this spot since the early nineteenth century. The character of Jura The Road leans peaty and fresh. A gentle medicinal note runs underneath, with a vegetative, earthy quality from the island air. There is a faintly musty depth, the kind you find in old stone warehouses. None of it feels heavy or harsh. The whisky first rests in ex-bourbon casks. It then finishes in casks that once held 20-year-old Pedro Ximénez sherry. This second stage brings dried apricot, treacle, and toasted nuts. A warm thread of ground coffee, cinnamon, and molasses follows on the finish. Bottled at 43.6%, this is an approachable Island malt with real backbone. Drink it neat to taste the island clearly. Each sip carries a little of that lonely road and the sea beyond it. Jura The Road is a fine introduction to this single distillery and its quiet corner of Scotland.
