Facts

The Isle of Jura is home to fewer than 200 people, around 5,000 red deer, and one road. The locals are called Diurachs — and this whisky was made for them. Sixteen years of maturation gives it a richness you can feel straight away. Caramel and fudge sit alongside dried fruit and a thread of orange marmalade. There is a gentle earthy smokiness underneath, grounding the sweeter notes. It is the kind of whisky that feels like it belongs somewhere very specific — and it does.

About the distillery

Distillery

Jura

Jura is a distillery located on the Isle of Jura, off the west coast of Scotland. It was founded in 1810, but ceased production in the 1900s. In 1963, it was rebuilt and reopened, and has been producing whisky ever since. The distillery produces a range of single malt whiskies, including the Jura 10 Year Old, Jura 16 Year Old, and Jura 21 Year Old. These whiskies are aged in a variety of casks, including ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, giving them a range of flavors and aromas. Jura uses locally sourced barley and water from the nearby Loch a'Bhaile-Mhargaidh in its whisky production. The distillery has its own malting floor and still house, allowing for complete control over the production process.

About the Jura 16 years Diurachs Own

Jura 16 years Diurachs Own is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Island region of Scotland. The Jura distillery sits on the Isle of Jura, one of the country's most isolated inhabited islands. The population rarely exceeds 200. There is one road, thousands of red deer, and one distillery. The name Diurachs refers to those who call the island home — its small and enduring community. This expression was made in their honour. The distillery dates back to 1810. It was rebuilt in the 1960s by blender Delme Evans. He designed it to produce a lighter spirit. The heavily peated Island style of the era was not his aim. That decision shaped the Jura house style for generations. Jura uses unusually tall pot stills, which contribute to the lighter and more delicate character of the spirit. George Orwell completed Nineteen Eighty-Four at Barnhill on Jura in 1948. He was drawn there by the island's extreme isolation. That remoteness finds its way into the character of everything produced there. Jura 16 years Diurachs Own delivers a rich and full-bodied dram. The nose opens with caramel, vanilla, and sweet fudge. Dried fruit and orange marmalade develop alongside a malty warmth. Peat smoke and earthy, woody notes add depth without dominating the sweeter profile. On the palate, lemon and fresh fruit brighten the experience. Sherry influence rounds out the body. The smoky finish is long and satisfying. This whisky sits comfortably between the lightly peated and more coastal Island styles. Jura 16 years Diurachs Own is bottled at 40% ABV. It makes an ideal gift for fans of approachable Island single malts. Jura produces a broad range, and this 16-year-old stands among its most characterful releases.
