Chichibu Ichiro Malt & Grain is a blended Japanese whisky from Chichibu distillery, located in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. Ichiro Akuto founded the distillery in 2008. It was the first new whisky production licence granted in Japan in 35 years. Akuto comes from a sake-brewing family whose roots stretch back to 1625. His goal was to make world-class Japanese whisky on his own terms. Chichibu has since earned multiple World's Best awards at the World Whiskies Awards. Ichiro Malt & Grain combines malt and grain whiskies into an approachable, balanced expression. Malt whisky contributes body and depth, while grain whisky adds lightness and sweetness. The result leans malty and woody, with a soft, rounded character. Caramel and vanilla lead the way, followed by honey and a flicker of fresh fruit. Apple and pineapple lift the mid-palate, keeping the blend from feeling heavy. Chichibu distillery is a small-batch operation with a hands-on philosophy. Ichiro Akuto oversees production closely, and in 2019 a second site — Chichibu Daini — opened to expand capacity. Akuto was named Master Blender of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge in 2019. He was also inducted into Whisky Magazine's Hall of Fame in 2024, the fifth Japanese inductee. That recognition reflects how seriously the whisky world takes this small Saitama producer. Chichibu Ichiro Malt & Grain is bottled at 46% ABV, giving it enough presence to drink well neat. The floral, fruity character makes it easy to explore without needing deep whisky experience. It is a reliable choice for anyone curious about Japanese blended whisky. It also makes a thoughtful gift for whisky lovers who want something beyond the mainstream. The sweet, balanced profile suits those who enjoy honey and caramel-forward drams.
