Gouden Carolus
In Mechelen, a city in Belgium, the Het Anker brewery turned its hand to whisky in 2010. The result was Gouden Carolus, a single malt that shares its name with the brewery's most famous beer. The Van Breedam-Leclef family has run the business here for five generations. The whisky grows out of that brewing heritage. The same malt that feeds the beers is distilled into spirit, then laid down in oak to mature. It is a Belgian single malt, still a rarity in a country far better known for its beer. That brewery link is the thing worth remembering. Few whiskies can trace their character back to a beer brand with centuries of history behind it. Gouden Carolus carries both stories in a single glass.
