Facts

Companta takes its name from the Scottish Gaelic word for friendship. It's a fitting title, since this whisky is built on partnership between two casks. Glenmorangie's distillers finish it in two different French wine casks. One held Grand Cru Burgundy, the other sweet Rhone wine. The result is deep cherry red, with cherry, dried fruit and burnt sugar up front. Chocolate and spice linger underneath, alongside a gentle sweetness. Grapes and orange zest surface too, layered over a base of Glenmorangie's famously delicate spirit. Drink it neat and let the fruit unfold slowly. Few single malts wear their cask finish this vividly.

Glenmorangie

Glenmorangie is a Scottish whisky distillery located in Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland. Founded in 1843, it is one of the older distilleries in Scotland. The distillery is known for producing single malt whisky using barley and pure spring water from the Tarlogie Springs, located on the distillery grounds. Glenmorangie's signature style is characterized by its light and delicate flavours. The distillery produces a variety of single malt whiskies, including the Glenmorangie Original, which is aged for ten years in ex-bourbon casks, and the Glenmorangie Signet, which is a unique blend of whiskies aged up to 40 years in a combination of different casks. In addition to its traditional single malt whiskies, Glenmorangie has also released several experimental and limited edition expressions, including the Private Edition range, which showcases innovative maturation techniques and unique cask finishes.

About the Glenmorangie Companta

Glenmorangie Companta is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Highland region of Scotland. Glenmorangie distils it at its distillery in Tain, on the Ross-shire coast. This expression is finished in two types of French wine cask. One held Grand Cru Burgundy, the other held sweet Rasteau wine from the Rhone Valley. That double finish gives Companta its deep, cherry red colour. It also brings flavours of cherry, dried fruit, orange and burnt sugar to the front of the palate. Glenmorangie has distilled whisky at Tain since 1843, using stills that remain the tallest in Scotland. Standing over 26 feet tall, they let only the lightest vapours rise into the spirit. That light, fruity new-make is exactly why a wine finish suits it so well. Glenmorangie Companta is the fifth release in the distillery's Private Edition series. Each yearly bottling in the range explores a different, unusual cask. This one turns to France instead of Spain or America for its cask influence. On the palate, Glenmorangie Companta opens with ripe grape and citrus zest. Milk chocolate and allspice follow, adding warmth without heaviness. A thread of oak runs underneath, a reminder of the years spent in American casks before the wine finish. The sweetness never turns sugary. It stays balanced by a gentle spice that builds through the middle of the dram. Dried fruit and a note of fresh fruit linger into a long, warming finish. At 46% ABV, Glenmorangie Companta has enough strength to carry its layered fruit and spice. Serve it neat in a tulip glass and give it a few minutes to open. The colour deepens the longer it sits, a visual cue to the wine casks behind it. This is a Highland single malt built for slow, thoughtful drinking rather than quick sipping. Fans of fruit-driven, cask-forward whisky will find plenty to explore here. From the first sweet note to the spiced finish.
