William Matheson turned a brewery on Morangie Farm into a distillery in 1843. A brewery had stood there since the 1730s, sharing the farm's Tarlogie Spring water. Those springs still supply the distillery today. What sets the place apart are its stills: eight metres of copper, the tallest in Scotland. Only the lightest vapours reach the top, so the spirit comes off delicate and clean. The distillery has worked at Tain, north of Inverness, ever since. You taste that restraint in the glass. Ripe pear, a lick of honey, vanilla that lingers. It is a whisky that never raises its voice.

Glenmorangie 10 years Original New Release is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Highland region. The distillery works at Tain, above the Dornoch Firth in the north of Scotland. Ten years in American white oak casks shape the spirit. Bourbon casks do all the work here, and the whisky is bottled at 40%. This is the house flagship, the bottle most people meet before any other Glenmorangie. The stills here reach eight metres, the tallest in Scotland. Their necks alone run over five metres. Only the lightest vapour climbs that far, so the new make arrives clean and delicate. Water comes from Tarlogie Springs in the hills above the town. The company also owns a stretch of forest in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. Its oak is air dried, then lent to bourbon makers for four years before it holds Scotch. Vanilla leads, which is what a decade in bourbon wood tends to give. Behind it sits ripe pear and a fresh, floral lift. The sweetness is gentle rather than sugary, closer to honey on warm bread. The body is light and the texture almost silky. Fruity notes hold through the middle before vanilla returns at the finish. Nothing shouts here. That restraint is the point of this malt. Glenmorangie 10 years Original New Release is the reference point for everything else the distillery makes. It carries no second cask and no finish.
