Facts

Glencadam sits in the quiet town of Brechin, the last working distillery in Angus. Its still room hides a quirk. The lyne arms tilt slightly upward. Heavier vapours fall back, so only the lightest spirit climbs through. That gives this single malt its clean, fruity backbone. After resting in bourbon barrels, it takes a turn in Oloroso sherry butts. The sherry adds dried fruit and a gentle sweetness over the fresh-fruit core. There is lemon brightness, a malty warmth, and a soft, spiced finish. Pour it neat and let the two stages of the cask do the talking.

Glencadam

Glencadam Distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery located in the eastern Highlands of Scotland. The Glencadam distillery uses traditional methods of production, including the use of wooden washbacks and copper pot stills, to create its distinctive single malt whisky. The distillery produces a range of different whiskies, including a 10-year-old expression and a 21-year-old expression. In 2003, the Glencadam distillery was mothballed due to a decline in demand for whisky. However, in 2008, the distillery was purchased by Angus Dundee Distillers and was reopened.

About the Glencadam Origin

Glencadam Origin is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky from the Glencadam distillery in Brechin, Scotland. It was named for 1825, the year the distillery first fired its stills. Glencadam is the only working distillery left in Angus, tucked into a corner of the eastern Highland country. It has a small but telling quirk. The lyne arms above its stills point gently upward, around fifteen degrees. Heavier vapours slide back into the pot, and only the lightest spirit carries over. That extra reflux is why Glencadam Origin tastes so clean and fruity. The whisky starts its life in American oak bourbon barrels. It then moves into Oloroso sherry butts for a final spell of ageing. This sherry finish is what gives the single malt its richer side. You get waves of dried fruit, raisins and a warm, nutty sweetness. Underneath the sherry, the lighter Glencadam character still shows through. There is fresh fruit, a squeeze of lemon, and a soft, malty body. A faint thread of grain keeps it honest and easy to follow. The Oloroso adds depth without burying the spirit that made the distillery its name. Origin sits at the gentler end of the Glencadam range. It is not the heaviest sherried dram you will find. That is rather the point. The whisky is built for slow, unhurried sipping. Pour it neat in a tulip glass and give it a few minutes. Let the dried fruit and lemon notes open up as it sits. This is a fine first step into Highland single malt Scotch whisky for newcomers.
