Batch 4 came out in 2020, built from Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherry puncheons with a touch of virgin oak. It won World's Best Single Malt the following year. The sherry does the heavy lifting here. Think prunes and raisins, orange peel, a run of burnt sugar and vanilla. Then the spice arrives: black pepper, cinnamon, a slow warm finish. Drink it neat and give it a minute. Glenallachie distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery located in the Speyside region of Scotland. The distillery was founded in 1967 by Mackinlay McPherson Ltd, and it is currently owned by the Glenallachie Consortium, led by industry veteran Billy Walker. The distillery is situated in the heart of Speyside, near the town of Aberlour, and draws its water from the nearby springs of Ben Rinnes. Glenallachie produces a range of whiskies, including both unpeated and peated expressions, which are aged in a combination of oak casks, including ex-bourbon, sherry, and virgin oak casks.

Glenallachie 10 years Cask Strength Batch 4 is a single malt from Speyside, Scotland. It goes into the bottle straight from the cask at 56.1% ABV. There is no colouring and no chill filtration. This 2020 release drew on Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherry puncheons. A little virgin oak sits in the recipe too. Ten years in that wood built its deep, sweet core. The strength runs high, but the fruit carries it. Independence shapes how Glenallachie works. The distillery is owned and managed on its own terms in Speyside. Master distiller Billy Walker selects and marries every cask himself. He reached fifty years as a Scotch blender in 2022, most of that spent on oak. His time running GlenDronach built the sherry-heavy instinct. Each batch of the 10 year old gets a fresh wood recipe. No two releases match. The nose opens sweet, with vanilla and caramel over burnt sugar. Behind that sits something earthy, closer to pipe tobacco than fruit. The palate starts on fresh fruit, then the sherry takes over. Dried fruit follows: prunes, raisins and sultanas, thick and dark. Orange peel cuts through the middle and keeps it lively. More vanilla rides underneath. The finish is all spice, with black pepper and cinnamon holding on. Batch 4 is the one that made people notice. In 2021 it was named World's Best Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards. The recipe behind it leaned hard on Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso puncheons, with virgin oak for grip. Later batches added Rioja barriques and shifted the balance elsewhere.
