Casks are chosen for balance rather than for volume. The brand has worked this way since it launched in 2009. Thirty years in oak makes this one of the oldest permanent bottlings in the range. None of it is chill-filtered or coloured. The name comes from a real place. Port Askaig is the ferry terminal on Islay where the boat from the mainland ties up. For most visitors it is the first ground they stand on. Sukhinder Singh founded the company that bottles it, and the range appeared in 2009 with three whiskies. The 30 year old left the line-up for a while and came back in 2015. Age has pulled this whisky toward the delicate end. Floral notes come first, cut with mint and a dusting of ginger. Spice builds as you drink, warm and dry, and a medicinal edge sits under it. Islay never quite loses that.
