Facts

Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the oldest distillery on Islay and Scotland's second oldest. This 15-year-old single malt spends its first dozen years in bourbon barrels. Then it rests three more years in oloroso sherry casks. That long finish gives it a deep mahogany colour and a generous, layered character. You get warm caramel and vanilla first. Dark chocolate and dried fruit follow, wrapped in gentle peat smoke. A coastal note of seaweed and a faint medicinal edge keep it lively. Pour it neat and let the sherry and smoke unfold slowly in the glass.

About the distillery

Distillery

Bowmore

Bowmore is a Scotch whisky distillery located in the town of Bowmore on the Scottish island of Islay. It is one of the oldest distilleries on the island, having been established in 1779 by local merchant David Simson. Bowmore is known for producing a range of peated and unpeated single malt whiskies. The distillery sources its water from the nearby Laggan River, which is said to contribute to the unique character of its whiskies. The barley used in production is malted on site using traditional floor malting techniques. The distillery has its own cooperage, where skilled craftsmen create and repair casks used for maturing the whisky.

About the Bowmore 15 years Single Malt

Bowmore 15 years Single Malt is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Bowmore distillery on Islay, Scotland. It comes from the oldest distillery on Islay, licensed back in 1779. That heritage runs through every drop of Bowmore 15 years Single Malt. The spirit matures for about twelve years in bourbon barrels. It then spends its final three years in oloroso sherry casks. This sherry finish deepens both the colour and the flavour. The result is a rich, dark Islay single malt with real depth. Expect a warm core of caramel, vanilla and dried fruit. Layers of dark chocolate and sweet sherry build on top. Underneath sits the classic Bowmore signature of peat smoke. A whiff of seaweed and a light medicinal note recall the sea air around the distillery. Soft woody and fruity tones round the whole thing off. The distillery sits right on the shore of Loch Indaal in the village of Bowmore. Its famous No.1 Vaults warehouse lies below sea level. Sea spray and salt air shape the spirit as it sleeps. Few Islay malts carry their coastal home quite so clearly. This is a single malt Scotch whisky to enjoy neat. Give it time and the smoke, sherry and chocolate notes open up in turn. The texture stays full and rounded, never sharp or hot. It suits both newcomers curious about peated whisky and seasoned Islay fans. Bowmore bottles this at 43% ABV. For a 15-year-old expression, it offers a lot of character for the money.
