Benromach

Benromach is a distillery located in the town of Forres, in the Speyside region of Scotland. Founded in 1898, the distillery has had a tumultuous history, changing hands and closing down several times before finally being purchased and reopened by Gordon and MacPhail in 1998. Benromach produces a range of whiskies, including the Benromach 10 Year Old, the Benromach 15 Year Old, and the Benromach Peat Smoke. The distillery is known for its traditional methods of production, including floor malting a portion of its barley on-site and using traditional wooden washbacks. Benromach is that it is one of the smaller distilleries in Speyside, producing just 160,000 liters of whisky per year. Despite its small size, the distillery has won numerous awards and accolades for its whiskies, including a gold medal at the International Wine and Spirit Competition for its Benromach 10 Year Old.

About the Benromach 10 years

Benromach 10 Year Old is an entry-level Speyside single malt crafted by Benromach Distillery, founded in 1898 and owned by Gordon & MacPhail since its reopening in 1998. The whisky is seen as a modern take on traditional Speyside style but with a welcome twist of peat smoke. This expression carries a 10-year age statement. It is matured in 80% first-fill ex‑bourbon casks and 20% first-fill ex‑Oloroso sherry casks for nine years, then finished for roughly one additional year in sherry casks. It is bottled at 43 % ABV, non‑chill filtered and uses no added colouring. The colour is golden amber. On the nose, you’ll encounter sweet green apple, pear, creamy honey, vanilla, and soft barley notes. Light smoke and citrus peel emerge with time. The palate is smooth and medium-bodied, offering malt sweetness, stewed fruit flavors such as apple and fig, gentle smoke, barley cereal and soft spice. A touch of leather, tobacco or earthy fungi may appear.  The finish is medium-long: warm, with honeyed fruit, lingering soft smoke, mild spice and subtle nuttiness.  Benromach 10 has earned notable recognition, including Gold for Best Speyside Single Malt (12 years & under) at the 2014 World Whiskies Awards. More recent awards include Gold at the 2020 International Spirits Challenge, Gold at the 2020 Scotch Whisky Masters, Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2021, and Gold again at the International Wine & Spirits Competition 2022. This whisky suits drinkers seeking a balanced and approachable dram with a hint of Speyside peat. It’s ideal for newcomers to smoky whisky and offers enough depth to satisfy more experienced drinkers. A few drops of water can soften the smoke and bring out fruit and honey notes. At its price point—usually under £45/€50—it delivers strong value in the entry-level single malt category.
