Facts

In November 2006, Benriach released its first Wood Finish Series. This bottling was one of the four. The malt spent most of its 15 years in American bourbon barrels. Then it moved into casks shipped from Jamaica, emptied of dark rum. That second stay changed the spirit. Sugar cane sweetness arrives first, followed by orchard fruit and vanilla. Warm spice builds late, with a dry tobacco edge at the close. Nothing was chill filtered out and no colour was added. The whisky reaches the glass exactly as the casks left it.

About the distillery

Distillery

Benriach

The Benriach distillery is located in the Speyside region of Scotland and was established in 1898. It is known for producing single malt whiskies that are characterized by their fruity and floral notes, often with a hint of peat smoke. The distillery sources its water from the Burnside Springs and uses traditional methods of production, including floor malting. In 2004, the distillery was closed but was reopened in 2008 after being purchased by a consortium led by Billy Walker. Today, Benriach produces a range of whiskies, including aged expressions and limited edition bottlings. The distillery is also known for experimenting with different cask finishes and maturation techniques, resulting in unique and interesting flavour profiles.

About the Benriach 15 years Dark Rum

Benriach 15 years Dark Rum is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 46%. Most of its life passed in American bourbon barrels at the Benriach distillery in Scotland. A second, shorter stay followed in barrels that had held dark rum from Jamaica. The bottling keeps its natural cask colour and skips chill filtration. Fifteen years of slow work sit behind a pale gold pour. The first Wood Finish Series arrived in November 2006. Four whiskies made up that release. Alongside the dark rum cask came Pedro Ximénez sherry, Madeira and aged Tawny Port finishes. Only 350 six-packs travelled around the world, so the run stayed genuinely small. The rum barrels themselves were sourced from the Caribbean island of Jamaica. That second maturation is where the bottling picks up most of its character. Toffee and vanilla lead the aroma, sweet from the first sniff. Behind them sit fresh fruit, sultanas and cinnamon, with ripe fruit deeper still. In the mouth the sweet toffee thickens and the vanilla turns creamy. Apricot and chocolate arrive next, held inside a woody frame. Spice takes over late and runs warm for a long time. A dry note of tobacco lingers once the rum sweetness fades. Benriach 15 years Dark Rum stands apart from the sherried and port-finished bottles beside it. Rum casks push the spirit toward sugar cane and tropical sweetness rather than dried fruit. The house style stays visible underneath, light and fruity. Anyone tracking how a cask reshapes a malt gets a clear lesson here. The whisky now sits in the distillery's archive, no longer part of the core range.
