In 1986 this Speyside malt became the first whisky ever sold as The Singleton. The owners thought Auchroisk was too awkward for drinkers to ask for by name. The name stuck for fifteen years. Then the original returned in 2001 on this Flora & Fauna label. What is in the bottle deserves the attention. It is bright and orchard-fresh at first, with grape and soft vanilla. Then spice arrives, and a flash of red berry, before the finish turns dry and woody. A quiet Speyside malt that rewards a slow glass.

Auchroisk 10 years is a single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, bottled at 43% ABV. The Auchroisk distillery stands at Mulben in Banffshire, between Rothes and Keith. Ten years in cask give the spirit time to settle and sweeten. This bottling belongs to Diageo's Flora & Fauna range. That series was built for working distilleries whose malt almost never reaches shelves under its own name. The distillery was commissioned in 1972 by International Distillers & Vintners, and production began in 1974. Its purpose was blunt: fill casks for the J&B blend. Water comes from Dorie's Well, soft after rising through granite and sandstone. Auchroisk also got there early on cask finishing. Its first bottling moved ten-year-old bourbon-cask spirit into sherry casks. Those extra two years of finishing came well before the practice caught on. The nose leads with fresh fruit, all orchard skins and green grape. Vanilla sits behind it, soft and creamy. The palate turns firmer, with spice and a streak of red berry. Cereal sweetness runs underneath, shaped by long fermentations of 75 to 80 hours. The finish dries out into wood and gentle oak. Nothing here shouts. The whisky is balanced rather than loud, and it stays that way. Most of this spirit still disappears into blends, so bottles like this stay scarce. Auchroisk 10 years is the only official release most drinkers will ever meet. Independent bottlers offer older casks, often at higher strength and stranger prices.
