Facts

Springwood is the pale, fast-growing wood a tree lays down early in the year. North American oak has plenty of it, and that is where this bottling got its name. Every cask here had held bourbon first, so the whisky stays pale and bright. Pink grapefruit and lemon come first, then barley sugar and a trace of honey. It finishes clean, with citrus and a little coconut. Auchentoshan triple distils everything it makes, and that keeps the spirit light. An easy aperitif, and best neat.

Auchentoshan

Auchentoshan is a Scottish distillery located near Glasgow, in the Lowlands region of Scotland. It was founded in 1823 and is known for producing triple distilled single malt whisky. The water used in the production process comes from Loch Katrine, which is located in the Trossachs National Park. This water is naturally filtered through the hills and glens, providing a unique and pure taste to the whisky. Auchentoshan produces a range of different expressions, from their classic American Oak and Three Wood expressions to their more exclusive and limited releases. The whisky is matured in a variety of casks including bourbon, sherry, and wine casks, giving each expression its own unique flavor profile. Auchentoshan is one of the only distilleries in Scotland to use a third still in their production process. This third still, known as the "Intermediate Still," helps to create a lighter and smoother whisky by removing any impurities and adding to the complexity of the flavour.

About the Auchentoshan Springwood

Auchentoshan Springwood is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Lowland region of Scotland. It comes from the Auchentoshan distillery, and carries no age statement. All of it was matured in North American ex-bourbon oak, then bottled at 40% ABV. The whisky launched in March 2012 for travel retail, sold in one litre bottles through World Duty Free stores. The name comes from a part of the oak itself. Springwood is the soft, fast growth a tree adds early in the year. North American oak carries a high proportion of it, and that gave the bottling its name. Auchentoshan triple distils all of its spirit, which no other Scottish malt does. The new make leaves the still at 81.5% ABV. Most distilleries settle nearer 70%, and that shows in the glass. Rachel Barrie built the range as master blender at Morrison Bowmore Distillers. Pink grapefruit and lemon lead on the nose, sweet and lightly floral. Honey sits underneath, along with a soft, oily weight. The palate turns towards orange and more honey, still light on its feet. Lemon and orange carry into a clean, fairly short finish. Cream arrives late, then a little oak and milk chocolate. A faint medicinal edge stops the whole thing from reading as too simple. Warm spice runs through the middle as well. Auchentoshan Springwood was the entry point to a five strong travel retail range. Silveroak and Solera sat at the top of it, at much higher strengths. Heartwood, the next step up, adds Oloroso sherry casks and older stock. Springwood keeps to bourbon wood alone and uses younger whisky, which is the point. Nothing sits between you and the distillery character. To taste what triple distillation actually does, this is the clearer way in.
