Auchentoshan is a Scottish distillery located near Glasgow, in the Lowlands region of Scotland. It was founded in 1823 and is known for producing triple distilled single malt whisky. The water used in the production process comes from Loch Katrine, which is located in the Trossachs National Park. This water is naturally filtered through the hills and glens, providing a unique and pure taste to the whisky. Auchentoshan produces a range of different expressions, from their classic American Oak and Three Wood expressions to their more exclusive and limited releases. The whisky is matured in a variety of casks including bourbon, sherry, and wine casks, giving each expression its own unique flavor profile. Auchentoshan is one of the only distilleries in Scotland to use a third still in their production process. This third still, known as the "Intermediate Still," helps to create a lighter and smoother whisky by removing any impurities and adding to the complexity of the flavour.

Auchentoshan Dark Oak is a single malt Scotch whisky produced by Auchentoshan Distillery in the Lowland region near Glasgow, Scotland. Released in 2019 for travel retail, this whisky stands out for its rich and wood-led profile. It is triple-distilled and aged in a mix of ex bourbon barrels, ex Oloroso sherry casks, and ex Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The finishing casks impart deep dried fruit sweetness and spice. It is bottled at 43% ABV. The whisky is non chill filtered and contains no added colour. The colour is dark honey to amber. On the nose you will find nutty toffee, coconut, vanilla oak spice, red berries, and floral freesia. The palate is warmly sweet and spicy. Look for roasted hazelnut, candied apple, crème caramel, brittle and liquorice tannins. The finish is floral and sweet, with caramel bars and honeysuckle notes. It offers a different style compared to lighter Auchentoshan expressions like American Oak Reserve. Dark Oak leans into sherry influence and bold spice instead of delicate citrus or green nutty notes. It is slightly sweeter and richer than the classic Lowland profile. This expression is suited for drinkers who enjoy sherry-aged whiskies and bold wood spice. It works well neat or with a small splash of water to ease the oak tannins and reveal fruit notes. Although not widely available outside airports, it is a good option for those seeking a richer Auchentoshan with depth and complexity.
