Facts

The ancient Kildalton Cross has watched over Islay for twelve centuries. This stone monument inspired Ardbeg to create something equally lasting in 2014. Dr. Bill Lumsden married spirits from ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks for this charity bottling. The result balances Ardbeg's signature peat with unexpected sweetness. Medicinal smoke meets vanilla warmth on the nose. The palate delivers brine and woody spice wrapped in honey. Every bottle sold helped fund a community centre in nearby Port Ellen. Pour it neat to taste the marriage of tradition and purpose. This peaty Islay single malt carries both fire and heart.

About the distillery

Distillery

Ardbeg

Ardbeg distillery is located on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay, Scotland. It was founded in 1815 and has been producing some of the world's most highly regarded Islay single malt whiskies ever since. Ardbeg uses traditional malted barley, Scottish water, and peat to produce its signature smoky and peaty flavors. The distillery uses malted barley that is heavily peated to around 55 parts per million (ppm) phenols, which gives its whiskies a distinct and powerful flavor. Interesting fact: In 2011, Ardbeg sent vials of its whisky to the International Space Station to study the effects of microgravity

About the Ardbeg Kildalton

Ardbeg Kildalton is a single malt Scotch whisky from the legendary Islay distillery. Created as a limited charity release in 2014. Named after the iconic 1,200-year-old Kildalton Cross that stands near the distillery. This expression demonstrates Ardbeg's commitment to its island community. The ancient Kildalton Cross is one of Scotland's finest high crosses. Carved from local chlorite schist around 800 AD. It features intricate Celtic knotwork and biblical scenes. The monument stands just two miles from Ardbeg distillery on the same rugged coastline. Dr. Bill Lumsden drew inspiration from this enduring symbol when creating this special bottling. Dr. Bill Lumsden crafted Ardbeg Kildalton using a careful marriage of different ages and styles of Ardbeg spirit. The whisky matured in both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, creating complexity beyond the distillery's typical offerings. This combination brings together the peaty, medicinal character Ardbeg is famous for with rich. Woody undertones and sweet vanilla notes from the bourbon barrels. On the palate, Ardbeg Kildalton reveals layers of smoky intensity balanced by honeyed sweetness. Brine from the Islay sea air mingles with vanilla flavours. While the sherry casks contribute deeper, woody spices that complement the whisky's natural peat smoke. The finish carries medicinal notes alongside lingering sweetness. Bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration. Ardbeg Kildalton drinks best when served neat or with just a few drops of water. This allows the complex interplay between peat, wood, and sweetness to unfold naturally. Each bottle of this limited release helped fund the construction of a new community hub in Port Ellen. Making it both a remarkable whisky and a symbol of island solidarity.
